Texas Hill Country Trails Region Task Force of the Heritage Trails Program of the Texas Historical Commission The Honorable Pat Tinley Kerr County Judge 700 Main Street Kerrville, Texas 78028 Dear Judge Tinley; October 27, 2004 Kerr County was designated to be part of the Texas Hill Country Trail by Governor John Connally in 1967 when he encouraged the Texas Historical Commission (THC) to create and market driving trails through Texas for all of the visitors coming for the World's Fair in San Antonio. The Heritage Trails Program was created as a regional heritage tourism initiative that partners communities with the state to increase travel to historic and cultural sites. These trails and the maps to support them were a huge success. However, by the early 80's the dollars to reprint the maps had dried up and the map distribution part of the program became dormant. Therefore the blue Texas Department of Transportation signs remained on the highways of Texas without the backup of the maps. In 1997 the THC in an effort to revitalize this program created an application process for the ten regions to apply for assistant to update the contents, add to THC's web site and reprint the maps. It is now time for the Hill Country Region to complete our application and bring our information current. The application requires a letter of support or resolution from the 19 County governments as well as museums, historical societies and Main Street Programs. We ask for a resolution of support from the Ken County Court to become part of the application for the Hill Country Trail Region. Please feel free to use your own words to express your support of this program or use one of the samples enclosed. If this subject can make your November 22, agenda I will be happy to be present.
