The importance of hiring a qualified experienced candidate is of upmost importance to the program. The enthusiasm and interest among our 4-H parents, volunteers and leaders is growing. One example is the Kerr County 4-H Food Show for 2004 had 33 participants compared to 23 participants in 2003. In 2004 58 youth participated at District Roundup at various contests in comparison to 14 in 2003. Twelve 4-H members competed in the record book contest up significantly from 2003. With this insurgence of interest it would be to our best interest to recruit and attract an experienced agent that could provide even more support to these areas. Often times people ask why high school age students move out of 4-H. There could be any number of reasons, however, an agent that has specialized in the scholarship process and leadership development could help to retain those senior age 4-H members to continue in pursuit of college scholarships as well as those leadership experiences. Because of various reasons, one of which is a Lack of salary increases by Texas Cooperative Extension, fewer agents are looking to move from one county to another. In an effort to entice some experienced agents to move, I would like to propose that Kerr County Commissioner's Court allow for an increase in salary from the county portion if an experienced qualified candidate could be recruited. Thank you for your consideration on this matter.
